Christopher Ramirez reviews Robert Heinecken

Robert Heinecken is an American photographer who describes himself as a “paraphotgrapher” because of how he can make photographic images without using a camera. In his series “Are You Rea” he was able to create images by getting a single magazine page and placing it on a light table so that the print on both sides of the page can be seen which would create his image. This series he worked on from 1964-1968 and similar to this series in the late 1960s Heinecken went out and started collecting and cutting magazines such as Vogue and Time Magazine and placing pornographic and sexual images in them and then returning the magazines to the newsstands in order for people to buy them and become surprised. This work is very appealing to me because of the mystery factor, you don’t know who or when your work will be seen or even how the view will react to the work once they discover it. The way he is able to create his photographs is very interesting because it is not the normal way and really a mystery in that you don’t know what the image my look like until you finish.
