Trine Søndergaard is a Danish photography-based visual
artist whose work is an ongoing investigation, which offers
viewers an intimate look at subject matter that is often neglected by the
camera. Her work obliterates boundaries and allows the viewer to
enter spaces and experience feelings and emotions that all too often dissipate
with a commonplace inclination to disregard them as too intimate or taboo. For
instance, in her series Now that You are
Mine, she brings her audience to the red light district of Copenhagen,
Denmark. Here she sheds light on the juxtaposing ideas of the idealized sexual
fantasy and the realities of the lives of the prostitutes living there, not
excluding the bruises, tears, and the needles. Søndergaard has claimed fame for
the authenticity of her intense imagery, which is layered in meaning and
realizes the everyday of the marginalized. Her use of flash and saturated
colors provides a sense of seediness and represents a shift in the aesthetic of the
documentary photograph.
