Joan Mitchell is considered a second generation of the
American Abstract Expressionist. Her primary subject is landscapes. “No Birds”
is actually a response to Van Gogh’s painting “Wheatfield with Crows”. Mitchell like many others was an
admirer of Van Gogh’s work.
What
draws me to Mitchell’s work, like the artist I have mentioned in the past, is
her use of color and mark making. We can see every brush stroke she makes in
her painting, as is leaving evidence of how she moved while creating her works
of art. Her marks in themselves tell a story of how the painting was made,
aside from the story or image they create as a work.
Thank you for posting. I had not seen Mitchell's "No Birds" 4 part painting. What a beautiful use of blues, yellows and some gray to create atmosphere and grasses or lines, and I like the completely full right end of the painting. Lime green "After Spring" painting is a delight.
